About the Author: Philip F.W. Ahrens is a partner in the Portland, Maine law firm of Pierce Atwood and co-chair of the firm's Environmental Department. Mr. Ahrens currently represents clients in all areas of environmental law. Much of his practice is spent counseling clients on complex, significant regulatory and enforcement matters. He has represented applicants as well as plaintiffs and defendants in many of the most significant environmental licensing and enforcement proceedings in Maine for many years.

Prior to joining Pierce Atwood in 1990, Mr. Ahrens spent 12 years in the Natural Resources Division of the Maine Attorney General's Office, serving as Deputy Attorney General and Division Chief for eight years. While in the Attorney General's Office, he supervised enforcement of the state's environmental laws and provided legal advice and representation to the state's environmental agencies, the Governor's Office and the Legislature. He has served on numerous advisory committees and has lectured both in Maine and nationally on a variety of environmental law topics.

Mr. Ahrens served for six years as Chair of the Natural Resources & Environmental Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association and currently serves as Vice-Chair of the State and Regional Environmental Cooperation Committee of the American Bar Association's Section of Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law. He has served on many advisory committees and has lectured both in Maine and nationally on many topics in environmental law. He is listed in The Best Lawyers of America. Mr. Ahrens earned a B.A. with honors from Amherst College and J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School.
